About This Game

Oriental Legend 2 is the long-awaited sequel to IGS's Journey to the West brawler series, released to arcades in March 2007 on the IGS PGM2 (PolyGame Master 2) board. The original five heroes return for another romp through the classic Chinese novel — joined by three newcomers: Erlang Shen, Drakan and Princess Iron Fan, plus two more characters that can only be unlocked after completing the game once.

The big change this time is character growth: defeating enemies earns experience and levels, and an underleveled character will genuinely struggle against the late-game bosses. Three modes are on offer — Plot (seven stages tuned for regular players), Online Ranking (a tougher eight-stage run that issues a code for the official website leaderboard) and Challenge Boss (a timed boss rush). It is also the first PGM2 game to support the hardware's IC card reader: buy a card at the arcade and your character's level and items carry over between runs. Up to four players can team up simultaneously.

Tips & Strategy

Don't skip enemies — level matters

Unlike most arcade beat 'em ups, Oriental Legend 2 tracks character levels. Rushing past fights leaves you underleveled, and the later bosses will punish a weak character hard. Clear out enemy waves before moving the screen forward.

Pick one character and stick with them

Growth is tied to the character you play. Swapping between characters at the select screen spreads your progress thin. Choose a favorite early, learn their combo timing, and pour every run's experience into that one roster slot.

Use an IC card for long-term progress

If the arcade cabinet has the IC card reader attached, buy a card before you start. It saves your character's level and items between sessions, so a week-long grind isn't wiped every time you step away from the machine.

Four-player division of labor

In co-op, spread out: keep one player on crowd control while others focus the boss or heavy enemies. Juggling a boss between multiple players keeps it locked up and ends fights far faster than four people mashing in the same spot.

Challenge Boss is the fastest way to learn

Boss rush mode throws every boss at you back to back with a timer. Even if you lose, you'll see each boss's attack patterns without grinding through the earlier stages first — knowledge that pays off in your next Plot run.
