About This Game
Virtua Fighter 2 is the game that proved 3D fighting could be a real martial art. Sega AM2 rebuilt the original's eight fighters on Model 2 hardware with fully texture-mapped stages, motion-captured animation, and a combat system refined until frame data - not gimmicks - decided matches: throws, reversals, the ring-out, and a stagger system that punishes mindless pressure.
The additions matter because they deepen the philosophy rather than replace it: two new characters (Lion Rafale, the assassin-in-training, and Shun Di, the drunken master whose drink mechanic is the series' most beloved character quirk), raised and lowered stage geometry, and counter-throws that keep the mind-game layers honest. Akira's Yoho and his absurdly hard move list became the community's skill ceiling, and the 2.1 revision on this page is the tournament standard. VF2 sold enormous numbers in Japan, set the technical template Tekken and Dead or Alive answered for years, and its ring-out mechanic is still the cleanest stage hazard fighting games have produced.

Tips & Strategy
Learn one character's frame data
VF2 rewards knowledge over reflexes. A single fighter's safe moves and punishable gaps beats a shallow roster.
Throw when blocked
Blocked strikes lose to throws in the classic triangle. Against a turtling opponent, the throw is the answer the game is asking for.
Use the terrain
Sloped and walled stages alter every move's reach. Fighting with your back downhill is half the ring awareness.
Ring-out is a win condition
You do not have to deplete the health bar. Circling opponents toward the edge is legal strategy - the game rewards it.
