About This Game

Dragon Warrior IV tells its story in five chapters, and the first four each follow a different protagonist - Ragnar the soldier, Alena the princess, Taloon the merchant and Mara and Nara the sisters - before chapter five finally hands you the hero and pulls the threads together.

That structure was genuinely experimental for 1990 and it makes the game feel like an anthology that keeps paying off. Its other big innovation is AI-controlled party members: in chapter five your companions act on their own, which was controversial at the time but let the designers write more elaborate battle behaviour. Taloon's chapter, where you run a shop and haggle, remains one of the strangest and most beloved episodes in the series.

  • Five-chapter anthology structure with rotating protagonists
  • AI-controlled party members in the final chapter
  • Taloon's merchant chapter - run a shop and hire mercenaries
  • Day/night cycle and a wagon that carries your whole party

Tips & Strategy

Do not skip the side chapters

Each of the first four chapters teaches a mechanic you need later. Rushing them makes chapter five much harder than it should be.

Use the wagon to rotate members

Only your active four fight, but the wagon lets you swap in reserves between battles. Keep a healer in reserve for long dungeons.

Taloon is a moneymaker

His chapter lets you buy low and sell high. Spending the time there funds the equipment you will want in the final chapter.

Control settings matter

Chapter five lets you set party AI to follow orders instead of acting freely. Switch it on for boss fights if the AI keeps making poor choices.
