About This Game

Super Mario Bros. is the game that defined the side-scrolling platformer. Plumbing brothers Mario and Luigi travel through the Mushroom Kingdom โ€” eight worlds of four stages each โ€” to rescue Princess Toadstool from Bowser, stomping Goombas, dodging Koopa Troopas and descending into underground and underwater stages along the way.

Its design still holds up: tight jump physics, power-ups that change how you play (the Super Mushroom doubles your size, the Fire Flower gives ranged attacks, the Starman grants brief invincibility) and secrets hidden in the level architecture โ€” invisible blocks, beanstalks and the famous Warp Zones that let a skilled player skip most of the game.

  • Eight worlds (32 stages) of precision side-scrolling platforming
  • Power-up system: Super Mushroom, Fire Flower and invincibility Starman
  • Hidden blocks, beanstalks and Warp Zones reward exploration
  • Defined the genre โ€” and introduced gaming's most recognisable mascot

Cheats & Secrets

World 1-2 ceilingWarp Zone โ€” skip straight to World 2, 3 or 4

Near the end of the underground section of World 1-2, jump onto the ceiling and walk right through the wall to reach the Warp Zone pipes.

World 4-2 ceilingHidden Warp Zone โ€” straight to World 8

Same ceiling trick as 1-2, but in World 4-2: the secret route bypasses the normal Warp Zone and drops you into World 8 immediately.

Leftmost Warp Zone pipe (timing)The famous 'Minus World' (World -1)

Entering the left pipe with the wrong alignment warps Mario into a broken, endless underwater stage โ€” a well documented glitch in the original cartridge.

Tips & Strategy

Learn the run button early

Holding B makes Mario run and, more importantly, jump farther. Most of the game's gaps and secret routes assume you are running โ€” walking everywhere makes the later worlds far harder than they need to be.

Fireballs bounce โ€” use them on stairs

Fire Mario's projectiles roll along the ground and rebound off walls, so they can clear low enemies and even hit foes standing on the far side of a staircase. Keep the Fire Flower whenever you can find a second one.

Take the Warp Zones only when you want them

Skipping to World 8 sounds great, but World 8 is brutal without practice. New players learn faster by playing worlds 2-7 normally and treating the Warp Zone as a speedrun tool.

Starman + pipes = easy points

When you grab a Starman, run into enemies rather than away โ€” each one scores. Chains of stomps (especially on Koopa Troopas) also give escalating 1-Up rewards.
