Elden Ring Beginner Guide โ€” Starting Class, Vigor and Early Priorities

Oct 2, 2026 ยท VaultGames Editorial ยท Elden Ring

The single most common beginner mistake in Elden Ring is spreading levels evenly. Vigor is not optional: most new players should push it toward 40 before worrying about damage stats, because surviving one extra hit is worth more than a few points of attack power. Pick a starting class that matches the weapon you want to use โ€” Vagabond for strength and heavy armour, Samurai for a strong starting bow and katana, Astrologer for sorcery โ€” and then commit to that one weapon for a while. Smithing Stones are limited at first, so a +3 weapon beats two +1 weapons every time.

Ignore the Tree Sentinel guarding the first Site of Grace. Ride past him on Torrent, follow the golden guidance toward Stormveil, and come back when you have levels and upgrades. Along the way, collect every Golden Seed and Sacred Tear you can find; these permanently expand your flask, which is the real measure of how long you can stay alive in a boss fight. Seek out the Whetstone Knife and the anvil at the Church of Elleh so you can actually upgrade your gear, and grab a Spirit Ash such as the Lone Wolf Ashes โ€” summoning is a core mechanic, not cheating.

Finally, learn the vocabulary of the game: rolling gives invincibility frames, so dodge through attacks rather than away from them; guard counters and jumping heavy attacks break an enemy's stance; and if a boss is repeatedly killing you in one combo, that is a signal to explore elsewhere and return stronger. Elden Ring rewards retreat as much as it rewards aggression.
