About This Game

1942 is the game that put Capcom on the map. Flying a P-38 Lightning through the Pacific theatre of World War II, you dodge sky-filling enemy formations โ€” the vertical-scrolling equivalent of a bullet-hell avant la lettre โ€” across a long campaign from the Solomon Islands toward Tokyo.

Its one defensive tool is the roll: a barrel roll with brief invincibility that lets you pass through entire squadrons. Enemies fly in scripted patterns, large bombers split into smaller planes when destroyed, and mid-level carrier landing sequences punctuate the campaign. It spawned a whole franchise (1943, 1944, 1941, 19XX) and defined the vertical shooter template for a decade.

  • The barrel roll: a brief-invincibility dodge that defines the game

Tips & Strategy

Roll through crowds, don't dodge around them

The barrel roll grants a moment of invincibility that passes through planes and bullets alike. The correct answer to an impossible formation is a roll into the gap, not a wide dodge that eats your firing angle.

Kill the small planes first

Large bombers break into small fighters that immediately dive at you. Shooting the big plane's pieces โ€” or steering the wreckage away โ€” before it splits keeps the sky clean.

Stay on the sides during carrier stages

The carrier interludes demand precision landings and the sides of the deck have the widest margin. Line up early; the middle approach leaves no room for error.

Fire discipline beats rapid fire

Your shots are unlimited but your screen position is everything. Rather than holding fire constantly, tap to keep a clean sight line on the formation you actually intend to break.
