About This Game
Operation Wolf is the game that defined the military rail shooter. You are a lone operative with a mounted machine gun, fighting through six stages - Communication Setup, a jungle, a village, a POW camp, a river, and the airport - to rescue hostages and take out the enemy command, and the whole thing plays like an 80s action film storyboard put on rails.
It refined the genre's fundamentals before the genre had them: you physically calibrate the gun at the start, bullets are a real resource you watch drain, grenades are a scarce crowd-clear, and wounded hostages create the genre's core moral hazard - shooting around civilians to hit the soldier behind them. Stages end in set-piece boss confrontations (a helicopter, an armored truck, a cannon emplacement) that taught a generation of players the phrase 'weak point'. The cabinet's recoil gun made it an arcade landmark, and its influence runs unbroken through Operation Thunderbolt, Time Crisis and every house-of-the-dead since.
- Six-stage military campaign ending in set-piece vehicle bosses
- Ammunition and grenades as tracked resources, not infinite spam
- Hostage civilians that punish careless trigger work
- The mounted recoil gun cabinet that defined the light-gun genre

Tips & Strategy
Fire in short bursts
Ammo is a tracked pool. Sweeping the screen full-auto empties you exactly when a wave arrives.
Aim for the roll-off grenades
Rolling grenades are the damage you cannot dodge - shooting them is defense, not offense. Prioritize them over riflemen.
Save grenades for massed waves
The grenade clears a screen sector. Throwing it at three enemies is waste; holding it for the tank stage is not.
Learn hostage positions per stage
Wounded hostages cost a life bar chunk if hit. Knowing where they lie lets you pre-aim the soldier behind them.
