About This Game

Tapper is Midway's 1983 bartending sprint: customers line up at four bars, you fill a mug, slide it down the counter, and it must reach every customer's hands - a missed catch sends the glass flying back off the bar, and one broken mug ends the round. Between rounds the game tours the world: a Budweiser saloon, a sports bar, a punk rock bar, and a space bar in zero gravity.

The design is pure tempo management. Customers ordered and waiting are handled by sliding drinks, but the counter is shared with returning empty mugs, tips you collect by running to the right spot, and customers who order a second time mid-queue. You physically run between the four bars along the cross-shaped counter, which makes the whole game a single continuous trade-off: where do I stand, what do I fill first, and when does that glass come back. The licensed Budweiser branding got swapped to Root Beer Tapper for later releases and home versions, and the cabinet's actual beer-tap joystick was one of the arcade's great novelty controllers. It is fast, funny, and mechanically airtight.

  • Four-bar cross counter - you run, pour and serve in one continuous loop
  • Returning mugs as the game's projectile hazard
  • A world tour of themed bars ending in a zero-gravity space bar
  • The beer-tap novelty controller (root beer in later versions)

Tips & Strategy

Serve from the farthest customer

Mugs travel the whole bar - filling for the customer at the end lets the glass serve nobody else. Fill the nearest order when the far end is clear.

Watch for second orders

Customers who finish one mug reorder. The mid-queue reorder is the round-killer; glance back before committing to the next bar.

Catch tips on the way back

Bonus pickups sit along the counter. Collect them while returning, never while customers are queuing in.

Respect the returning mug

A missed mug flies off the end. If a bar is emptying, move to meet the glass instead of hoping it stops.
