About This Game

Mega Man 5 opens with Proto Man apparently kidnapping Dr. Light, and sends Mega Man through eight new Robot Masters to find out why. It is the fifth game in the classic NES line and the one that leaned hardest into optional extras.

The headline addition is Beat, a bird companion who attacks enemies on his own once you collect the eight letter plates hidden across the stages. Proto Man also makes his first playable-adjacent appearance with the Proto Shield, and the Charge Shot returns from Mega Man 4 as the default way to fight. Stages are built around vertical movement and the Rush Coil/Jet, and the Robot Master weapon chain is unusually generous - Gravity Hold and Gyro Attack make short work of several later fights.

  • Beat the bird: find the eight letter plates to unlock an attacking companion
  • Eight Robot Masters - Gravity Man, Wave Man, Stone Man, Gyro Man, Star Man, Charge Man, Napalm Man, Crystal Man
  • Proto Man and the Proto Shield introduced into the story
  • Charge Shot retained from Mega Man 4

Tips & Strategy

Gravity Man first

His Gravity Hold freezes airborne enemies, which trivialises several later stages, and his stage is the most forgiving of the eight.

Hunt the letter plates

The M-E-G-A-M-A-N-V plates are hidden in specific stages. Collecting all eight unlocks Beat, whose dive attack makes the Wily stages far easier.

Charge while you jump

There is no penalty for holding fire constantly. Keep the Mega Buster charging between jumps so a full shot is ready when you land.

Beat the mini-boss for a weapon refill

The mid-stage fortress robots drop large weapon capsules. Clearing them before entering a Robot Master door is the cheapest way to top up.
