Fallout 4 Beginner Guide โ€” SPECIAL Stats and Perks That Matter

Oct 2, 2026 ยท VaultGames Editorial ยท Fallout 4

Fallout 4's SPECIAL system sets the ceiling for everything else, because perks unlock at specific attribute levels and attribute points are scarce. The classic beginner mistake is spreading points evenly, which leaves you unable to reach the high-tier perks in any tree. Instead, decide what kind of fighter you are โ€” a Rifleman who uses single-shot weapons, a Commando with automatics, a Gunslinger with pistols, or a melee bruiser โ€” and raise the matching attribute high enough to access the damage perks early. Damage perks are the single biggest multiplier on your effectiveness.

Beyond damage, three perks quietly do more work than any weapon. Armorer lets you add ballistic weave and armour upgrades, turning flimsy gear into something that survives the late game. Lone Wanderer rewards playing without a companion with extra carry weight and damage resistance, which is a huge convenience if you prefer solo exploration. Local Leader unlocks supply lines between settlements, which is what makes the settlement system actually function as an economy rather than a chore. Pick these three and fill in around them.

Early on, grab the power armour and fusion core available from the very first Minutemen quest in Concord โ€” it is scripted to be found, and it carries you through the early game until you can build better. Use V.A.T.S. deliberately: it pauses combat, targets specific limbs and uses the critical meter you build with repeated hits, which turns unwinnable firefights into manageable ones. And pick up everything โ€” junk items are crafting materials in disguise, and scrapping them at a workbench is how you keep your settlements and weapons upgraded.
