Monster Hunter Wilds Early Game โ 8 Mistakes to Avoid
Oct 2, 2026 ยท VaultGames Editorial ยท Monster Hunter Wilds
The most expensive mistake in the early game is upgrading armour before your weapon. A stronger weapon ends fights faster, which means fewer opportunities to make a fatal mistake, and it unlocks access to higher-tier materials sooner. Armour only needs attention when you start taking damage faster than you can heal it โ at which point you craft a piece or two from the last major monster you beat, not a whole matching set.
Resist the urge to farm rare materials like plates and gems before Master Rank. Their drop rates are low by design, the gear you would build with them is replaced within a few hours, and the time is better spent pushing the story. Similarly, do not switch weapons every hunt: pick one, learn its rhythm and gauges, and only add a second weapon to your Seikret once the first feels natural. A melee weapon paired with a ranged option is the most flexible combination.
The systems around the hunt are quietly powerful. Using the optional quests that the quest handler offers lets you re-fight monsters you have already beaten, which is the reliable way to finish a weapon or armour piece without waiting for a random spawn. Breaking parts and severing tails yields bonus materials at the end of a hunt, so target them deliberately rather than hitting whatever is closest. And use the environment: traps, endemic life and terrain hazards do meaningful damage and create openings, which is exactly what a hunter with a fresh weapon needs.
