Monster Hunter: World Beginner Guide โ€” Weapons, Sharpness and Captures

Oct 2, 2026 ยท VaultGames Editorial ยท Monster Hunter: World

The most important choice in Monster Hunter: World is your weapon, because the fourteen types play like completely different games. For a first hunter, Sword and Shield is the most forgiving โ€” it is fast, lets you use items without sheathing, and blocks. Long Sword rewards aggression with its spirit gauge, Hammer is simple and stuns monsters when you hit the head, and Light Bowgun keeps you at a safe distance. Avoid Charge Blade, Insect Glaive and Hunting Horn until the basics click; they are excellent but demand a lot of input knowledge. Spend fifteen minutes with each in the training area before committing.

Sharpness is the mechanic that trips up every new player. Bladed weapons lose sharpness as you attack, and when the gauge drops into a lower colour your damage falls and your attacks bounce off tough hides. Keep a whetstone in your pouch and sharpen during safe moments โ€” when the monster is knocked down or focused elsewhere โ€” rather than waiting until your attacks start bouncing. Stamina works the same way for evasive manoeuvres: eat a meal at the canteen before every hunt to raise both your stamina and health ceilings, because arriving at full strength is free.

Finally, learn to capture rather than kill. Most non-elder monsters can be captured once they start limping, and a captured monster gives extra rewards compared to a carve. Bring a shock or pitfall trap and two tranq bombs, set the trap under the limping monster, and use the bombs on it. Capturing is faster, safer and more profitable โ€” the game simply never tells you that.
