Fallout 4 Update Quadruples the Mod Archive Limit

Aug 18, 2026 · VaultGames Editorial · Fallout 4

Bethesda released a Fallout 4 update on 18 August 2026 that substantially expands modding headroom. The BA2 archive limit was raised from 256 to 1024 — a fourfold increase aimed at accommodating larger mod collections. On PlayStation, archives are now supported for the first time, along with new file types including .nif, .dds, .bink, .cdx, .csg, .wav and .fuz. Xbox Creations can now be uploaded at up to 2 GB.

The Creation Kit received quality-of-life improvements, including localisation export support and a Search and Replace tool aligned with Starfield. Bethesda also fixed crashes related to the Steam Deck virtual keyboard, audio streaming errors, and the Creations menu on the Microsoft Store.

On PC the update moves the game to runtime 1.11.240, which means mods depending on F4SE, native plugins and the Address Library may need updates before heavily modded saves will run. F4SE itself was updated on the same day, but dependent components can lag behind.
